Nashua mayor among bipartisan group sounding alarm on national debt

CONCORD ? Nashua Mayor Donnalee Lozeau led a bipartisan group of current and former public officials forming a state chapter of the Fix the Debt group dedicated to solving the nation?s fiscal crisis. Lozeau, who served as a Republican in the Statehouse, said the message being sent is for Congress and the next elected president to have the courage to put ?everything on the table? to come up with a plan to eliminate the federal deficit and pare down the $16 trillion in debt. ?Everything has to be on the table; we have to be willing to make the hard choices,? said Lozeau, who is co-chair of the state group along with state Sen. Lou D?Allesandro, D-Manchester. Former Congressman and Ambassador Dick Swett said the debt can?t be wiped out right away but Congress and the White House need to use the fiscal cliff the country faces Jan. 1, 2013 to come up with a credible solution. ?I ran on this issue in 1990 but we didn?t balance our budget until 1995 and 1996. This isn?t going to be solved in the first year,? Swett said. ...
