Nashua mayor among bipartisan group sounding alarm on national debt

CONCORD ? Nashua Mayor Donnalee Lozeau led a bipartisan group of current and former public officials forming a state chapter of the Fix the Debt group dedicated to solving the nation?s fiscal crisis. Lozeau, who served as a Republican in the Statehouse, said the message being sent is for Congress and the next elected president to have the courage to put ?everything on the table? to come up with a plan to eliminate the federal deficit and pare down the $16 trillion in debt. ?Everything has to be on the table; we have to be willing to make the hard choices,? said Lozeau, who is co-chair of the state group along with state Sen. Lou D?Allesandro, D-Manchester. Former Congressman and Ambassador Dick Swett said the debt can?t be wiped out right away but Congress and the White House need to use the fiscal cliff the country faces Jan. 1, 2013 to come up with a credible solution. ?I ran on this issue in 1990 but we didn?t balance our budget until 1995 and 1996. This isn?t going to be solved in the first year,? Swett said. ...

Burnt Sugar Bundt Cake | Completely Delicious

Burnt Sugar Bundt Cake

Cakes are special, and they are meant to be shared. I may make a batch of cookies or pan of brownies on a whim or to satisfy a craving, but I usually reserve cakes for an occasion. Saturday night wasn?t anything extraordinary, just dinner with my in-laws. We started with spaghetti and meatballs. Later we played pinochle, an old fashioned card game our families still enjoy, and eventually cut into this cake.

I?ve made this burnt sugar bundt cake before, and it always elicits the same response. Ohhs and ahhs followed by silence as everyone takes it in.

Burnt Sugar Bundt Cake

Burnt Sugar Bundt Cake

It?s not an overly complicated cake, but it does have a few extra steps. Caramelizing sugar may seem scary, but it?s actually surprisingly simple. It?s just sugar in a saucepan that you watch melt and turn amber in color, that?s it! No stirring, no candy thermometers. The burnt sugar is the star of this recipe, showcased in both the cake and the icing. It would be great any time of year but I think that caramel desserts go with fall particularly well.

I hope you?ll serve this caramel flavored bundt cake at your next dinner party or family gathering. It?s a crowd pleaser for sure and will disappear faster than you can imagine. Which is why I sadly don?t have any left to have for breakfast this morning.

Ingredients

Instructions

To make the burnt sugar liquid:

  1. Place the sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Let the sugar melt and turn an amber color. Do not stir, but swirl the pan around to make sure the sugar is caramelizing evenly.
  2. Once the sugar is all melted, remove from heat and add the heavy cream in a small stream. It's okay if it gets a little lumpy. Return the pan to medium heat and cook while stirring until smooth.
  3. Pour into a 2 cup or larger liquid measuring cup. Add the lemon juice and enough milk to measure 1 cup. Set aside.
  4. For the cake:

  5. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Butter and flour a bundt cake pan.
  6. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix the butter and sugar together until light and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each. Add the vanilla.
  7. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the mixing bowl in three additions, alternating with the burnt sugar liquid and ending with the flour mixture. Scrap down the bowl as necessary.
  8. Pour into the prepared bundt pan and bake until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, 45-55 minutes. Let cool in the pan 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting:

  10. Beat the butter, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla and the burnt sugar liquid until smooth. Add additional tablespoons of the burnt sugar liquid to reach desired consistency.
  11. Frost the bundt cake. Store in an air tight container at room temperature, it will keep for several days.

US futures heading lower on dour forecast for Asia

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stock futures dipped Monday as economists grow increasingly pessimistic about the outlook for Asia, as well as expectations for a leaden performance from major U.S. corporations as the earnings season kicks off.

Dow Jones industrial futures gave up 42 points to 13,494. The broader S&P futures slid 5.3 points to 1,450.20, and Nasdaq futures fell 13.75 points to 2,790.50.

The World Bank on Monday warned of the possibility of a "more pronounced slowdown" in China, the world's second largest economy, and it cut its growth forecast for Asia.

If Asia takes a turn for the worse, it could drag down the U.S. economy. One of the few bright points for the U.S. during the recession was tremendous growth from developing nations in Asia and other regions of the world for exports.

The bank cut this year's growth outlook for developing Asia-Pacific economies to 7.2 percent, down from its May forecast of 7.6 percent. The bank cut its forecast for China, the region's biggest economy, to 7.7 percent from May's 8.2 percent.

Major U.S. corporations begin posting results for the latest quarter this week, starting with Alcoa on Tuesday.

FactSet says companies in the Standard & Poor's index are expected to post an overall profit decline for the first time in 11 quarters.

However, some of those expected declines are being offset by expectations of another intervention from the U.S. Federal Reserve, which has indicated that it stands ready to act if there are not more signs of recovery in a fragile economy.

Two big banks, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo, post earnings Friday.

Hey guys, this RP is a work in progress (sorry was getting sleepy) but I'm totally willing to take reservations for characters. I'd like to get one listener and dragon for each country before we go any further than that but once those seven spots are filled then it's free reign and you can affiliate with whatever country you want. Character skeletons and the rest of the dragon info will be up sometime tomorrow(10/7) or the next day(10/8(assuming my job doesn't call me in for an all day shift)) but the skeletons will be the next things to go up. Until then, feel free to show your friends what I've got here so far because the more the merrier! If you have any questions, please PM me and I'll get back to you ASAP. Cheers mates!

How to restore native grasslands in the interior Pacific Northwest, U.S.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 4, 2012) ? Weed scientists in Oregon have found that the timing of herbicide application along with reseeding of native grasses offers the best recipe for restoring native grasslands while controlling invasive weeds. Grasslands are a valuable resource for ecosystems, providing soil conservation, food and fiber production, and wildlife habitat. When threatened by invading exotic species, the quality and quantity of forage for wildlife can be reduced, fire frequencies can be altered, soil moisture and nutrients can be depleted, and the costs of land management can increase.

A study in the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management evaluated various treatments with five herbicides over a period of 6 years. The experiments were carried out within the Wenaha State Wildlife Area in northeastern Oregon. The location is representative of the grasslands and ecoregion of the interior Pacific Northwest, where an exotic flowering plant, sulfur cinquefoil, is threatening native grasslands.

The study's experiments used two application rates and three application times for five herbicides. In addition, each experiment site had a seeded and unseeded treatment of native perennial grass seeds. The herbicide picloram provided the best control of sulfur cinquefoil. A one-time application of picloram reduced the abundance of sulfur cinquefoil during the 6-year period.

However, if the goal is to reduce all exotic species and restore native grasses, time is an important ingredient. Timing the application of herbicides is important so that they do not threaten desired native plants while attacking the invader. In the interior Pacific Northwest, most native species are dormant in the late summer and early autumn, making this the best time to apply herbicides for minimal effect on native plants.

The length of time required to manage invading species is another factor. While an herbicide may make inroads into reducing an exotic species of plant in 2 to 3 years, this does not mean that the native species will once again dominate. The best results were seen when reseeding of native grasses followed herbicide application.

During the first 3 years of this study, the reseeding trial experienced poor success. Growth was slow and the desired plants were small. However, as the evaluation of this program continued, native plants became successfully established by the sixth year. The seeding of native grasses reduced exotic grass cover by 20 percent.

YEC Members Give 12 Tips for Drafting a Startup-Ready Resume ...

Question by: Elizabeth

Constructive Feedback for the Startup

?Startups love feedback, especially when it?s actionable and more interesting than your generic ?you need SEO? idea. Successful startups need thinkers and movers, so in addition to providing great feedback, share how YOU can help improve the business and how you have already carved out a pretty neat role for yourself in the company.?

- Danny Wong | Co-Founder, Blank Label Group, Inc.

Innovation Differentiation

?Bring something different to the table. Not only in your resume, but in pitching yourself. In addition, bring ideas with you. Approach the company having done your research, and make recommendations based on where you see opportunity. Then relate it to your experience and how you would contribute.?

- Matt Cheuvront | Founder, Proof Branding

Forget Your Resume!

?Do something that makes you stand out. If you haven?t done anything especially impressive to make your resume pop, impress with your initiative. Get to know the product extremely well and make recommendations. Build something. Send snail mail. The more enthusiasm and commitment you show, the more likely they are to decide you?re worth bringing in. Resumes and cover letters are not enough.?

- Emerson Spartz | CEO and Founder, Spartz Media

Prove Your Proactivity

?You can be incredible intelligent and experienced, but unless you are proactive and able to think on your feet independently, it doesn?t matter in the context of a startup. You need to ?tell? that you are proactive by highlighting experiences where you have created something new or worked alone, and you should ?show? that you are by quickly and energetically following up with your interviewer.?

- Caroline Ghosn | Co-Founder and CEO, The Levo League

Embody the Corporate Values

?Culture is really important at successful startups like Airbnb and LivingSocial. Most of these firms publish their corporate values publicly, so make sure that you review the lists and incorporate the concepts into your resume. It will not only help you determine if you?re a fit for the firm, but will also help the firm to really envision you among their employees too.?

- Doreen Bloch | CEO / Founder, Poshly Inc.

Share Your Story

?Show them that you either have a history of innovation, or perhaps make an innovative suggestion for the company when you reach out to them. Startups want to bring on people that can help take them to the next level.?

- Justin Beegel | Founder, Infographic World, Inc.

Are You In It for the Long Haul?

?Demonstrate that you want to grow with the company. Nothing makes me happier than knowing someone respects the startup model and wants to be part of the company?s core. Use the cover letter to show your interest in the company and why you think you?re a good long-term asset. Saying you?re willing to do things that aren?t ?your job? doesn?t hurt either.?

- Therese Kuster | Owner, TargetClick Marketing Solutions

A Startup Spirit

?Startups look for a can-do entrepreneurial spirit in their employees. Instead of showing how good you are at following the rules, show off where you?ve taken initiative or started your own project.?

- Laura Roeder | Founder, LKR

In-House Referrals Always Help

?Stand out by providing a reference from one of their existing employees. Companies love hiring based on recommendations of existing staff, so network your way into a job to stand out. As an alternative, demonstrate your value and initiative by tackling a small project on behalf of the prospective employer and showing it off on your cover letter.?

- Matt Mickiewicz | Co-Founder, Flippa and 99designs

Remember Your Hobbies and Humanity!

?Big, funded startups can get skilled individuals for any role, but they are building their businesses for the long haul. Most will care more about culture and making sure there is a fit. Always include at least one line about your interests. Whether reading or camping, coaching youth or running marathons, these insights will tell the company more about you and will make you stand out.?

- Aaron Schwartz | Founder and CEO, Modify Watches

Fearlessness of Failure

?A resume is merely a conversation starter that gets your foot in the door. Be ready to talk about experiences that show you are not afraid to fail and showcase how you?ve taken risks in the past. There is nothing wrong with showcasing a failed attempt at entrepreneurship because it shows that you can operate with an entrepreneur?s mind within a more mature startup organization.?

- Matt Wilson | Co-founder, Under30CEO.com

Can You Do the Hustle?

?Show them how you ?pounded the pavement? to get the job done. At successful startups, a seemingly easy task is often littered with obstacles that employees need to overcome. Demonstrate that you?ve gone above and beyond, such as driving hours to see a client in person or staying tethered to your laptop on a weekend to be responsive to customer inquiries. Hustle goes a long way.?

- Bhavin Parikh | CEO, Magoosh Test Prep

(AP) ? Michael Schumacher is retiring from Formula One racing again ? and this time, he says, "it might be forever."

Unable to duplicate the success of his prime, the seven-time F1 champion announced Thursday he will retire at the end of the season, bringing an end to the most decorated career the sport has seen.

Though Mercedes had announced last week that Schumacher would be replaced by Lewis Hamilton next season, there had been speculation the 43-year-old German could move to Sauber. He instead chose to end his career.

"Basically, I've decided to retire at the end of the year," Schumacher said at the Japanese Grand Prix. "Although I was able and capable of competing with the best drivers that are around, at some point it's time to say goodbye and this time it might be forever."

Schumacher holds the record for championships and grand prix wins, with 91. He began his career in 1991 and won two titles with Benetton, then five for Ferrari. He initially retired in 2006, but came back to drive for Mercedes in 2010. The comeback has not lived up to expectations, with just one podium finish.

"It's without doubt that we did not achieve our goals to develop a world championship fighting car," Schumacher said. "But it is also very clear I can be happy with my overall achievements."

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn paid tribute to Schumacher. Brawn was also chief strategist at Ferrari when Schumacher and the Italian team became so dominant that the sport's authorities made several rule changes to even the level of competition.

"He's the most courageous racing driver of the century," Brawn said. "And I feel very privileged to have worked with Michael from the beginning."

Schumacher hasn't decided what he will do after the season, saying he just wants to focus on the final six races. He has struggled this season, and was issued a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race at Suzuka for causing a spectacular crash with Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne during the Singapore GP.

"There is no point in the need to make any decisions right now," Schumacher said. "I have options obviously but whatever it will be will be made in time."

Schumacher acknowledged he considered retiring even before the announcement of Hamilton's move to Mercedes.

"During the past month I was not sure if I still had the motivation and energy which is necessary to go on," Schumacher said. "It is not my style to do something which I am not 100 percent feeling for."

Schumacher holds the record for the most races won in a single season, with 13 in 2004. In 2002, he became the only driver in F1 history to finish in the top three in every race of a season, and set the record for most consecutive podium finishes.

Even though his comeback didn't work out the way he wanted, Schumacher said he learned a lot from the experience.

"Over the past six years I have learned a lot," Schumacher said. "For example, you can open yourself without losing focus, that losing can be both more difficult and instructive than winning, which is something I lost sight of in the early years."

Stanford Study Flawed: Organic Produce May Be More Nutritious After All

Lets look at the meat of the article

In fact, the Stanford study ? actually a meta-study, an analysis of more than 200 existing studies ? does say that ?consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.?

Since that?s largely why people eat organic foods, what?s the big deal? Especially if we refer to common definitions of ?nutritious? and point out that, in general, nutritious food promotes health and good condition. How can something that reduces your exposure to pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria not be ?more nutritious? than food that doesn?t?

Because the study narrowly defines ?nutritious? as containing more vitamins.

So his problem is the authors were dishonest because they didn't adhere to his incorrect definition of nutritious.

And near the end
Like too many studies, the Stanford study dangerously isolates a finding from its larger context

That's a feature, not a bug. The role of a research paper isn't to make some broad sweeping conclusion, it's to carefully explore a narrow question, were the organics more nutritious, and on that question the answer was no.

Anthropologist finds evidence of hominin meat eating 1.5 million years ago: Eating meat may have 'made us human'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? A skull fragment unearthed by anthropologists in Tanzania shows that our ancient ancestors were eating meat at least 1.5 million years ago, shedding new light into the evolution of human physiology and brain development.

"Meat eating has always been considered one of the things that made us human, with the protein contributing to the growth of our brains," said Charles Musiba, Ph.D., associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado Denver, who helped make the discovery. "Our work shows that 1.5 million years ago we were not opportunistic meat eaters, we were actively hunting and eating meat."

The study was published October 3 in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE.

The two-inch skull fragment was found at the famed Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, a site that for decades has yielded numerous clues into the evolution of modern humans and is sometimes called `the cradle of mankind.'

The fragment belonged to a 2-year-old child and showed signs of porotic hyperostosis associated with anemia. According to the study, the condition was likely caused by a diet suddenly lacking in meat.

"The presence of anemia-induced porotic hyperostosis?indicates indirectly that by at least the early Pleistocene meat had become so essential to proper hominin functioning that its paucity or lack led to deleterious pathological conditions," the study said. "Because fossils of very young hominin children are so rare in the early Pleistocene fossil record of East Africa, the occurrence of porotic hyperostosis in one?suggests we have only scratched the surface in our understanding of nutrition and health in ancestral populations of the deep past."

Musiba said the evidence showed that the juvenile's diet was deficient in vitamin B12 and B9. Meat seems to have been cut off during the weaning process.

"He was not getting the proper nutrients and probably died of malnutrition," he said.

The study offers insights into the evolution of hominins including Homo sapiens. Musiba said the movement from a scavenger, largely plant-eating lifestyle to a meat-eating one may have provided the protein needed to grow our brains and give us an evolutionary boost.

Some scientists have argued that we became human when we became carnivorous-omnivorous creatures.

"Meat eating is associated with brain development," he said. "The brain is a large organ and requires a lot of energy. We are beginning to think more about the relationship between brain expansion and a high protein diet."

Humans are one of the few surviving species with such a large brain to body size ratio. Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, eat little meat and have far less brain capacity than humans, Musiba said.

"That separates us from our distant cousins," he said. "The question is what triggered our meat eating? Was it a changing environment? Was it the expansion of the brain itself? We don't really know."

Four students participating in the CU Denver Tanzania Field School were at Olduvai Gorge when the skull fragment was discovered.

"It was a great experience for them," said Musiba, director of the Field School and a native of Tanzania. "Hopefully, it will inspire even more students to come to Africa and help us find answers to the questions posed by these discoveries."
