? 1,700 patients with heart disease analyzed clearly show more heart-related disease with cholesterol between 1 and 250 than between 300 and 400 or higher! (an inverse correlation).

In response, Adele has hired Schillings law firm to represent her in a possibly lawsuit against the tabloid.
"We are informed that the French magazine Public has today published images which it claims show our client in a sex tape," one of Adele's attorney says. "Our client has not appeared in a sex tape as claimed in the article. Our client does not appear in the photographs. Such claims are grossly defamatory. Our client is taking legal action in relation to this matter."

Two spacewalking cosmonauts moved a bulky zero-gravity crane to a new home on the International Space Station Thursday, but ran out of time before they could beef up the orbiting lab's armor against space junk.
Russian spaceflyers Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov spent more than six hours working outside the space station during the spacewalk. Their main goal was to move a space construction crane, called Strela, from the Pirs docking port on the bottom of the space station to a rooftop module called Poisk.
The spacewalkers had planned to install new metal shields on the station's Russian segment to protect it against damage from micrometeorites and space junk. But the crane relocation work ran long and they had to skip the shield installation task.

Flight controllers at Russia's Mission Control center near Moscow told the cosmonauts they did a wonderful job, despite the skipped work. The spacewalk began at 9:31 a.m. EST (1431 GMT) and lasted six hours and 15 minutes.
For Russia's Federal Space Agency, the crane relocation was the critical item on today's spacewalk to-do list. The move ensures the crane will remain aboard the space station when the Pirs docking port is discarded to make way for Russia's new Multipurpose Laboratory Module, which is due to arrive at the outpost by 2013, NASA officials said.
It was tough work in space, with the cosmonauts falling more than an hour behind schedule in order to move the unwieldy crane without damaging other parts of the space station. Mission controllers reminded the spacewalkers to use their spacesuit cooling systems to avoid overheating from their exertion. [ Photos: Building the Space Station ]
The cosmonauts agreed.
"We're all hot and bothered," one of the spacewalkers said at one point.
To make the space gear move, the spacewalkers had to extend the Strela crane out to nearly its full 46-foot length, swivel it around the Pirs module and attach it to a second crane. The cosmonauts then used the second crane to move the first one to a different module on the station's roof.
Unlike the space station's Canadian-built Canadarm2 robotic arm, the Strela cranes are unpowered. They are operated by a hand crank that cosmonauts turn in order to extend the crane to a desired length.
"That's a hand-operated telescoping pole," NASA's space station spacewalk officer Glenda Brown explained in a video.
In addition to the crane work, the cosmonauts also took took swab samples of areas beneath the insulation covering the station's Pirs module. Russian scientists want to test the samples to see if any organisms have survived beneath the many layers, NASA officials said. The spacewalkers also installed a new materials experiment called Endurance before wrapping up their work.
Kononenko and Shkaplerov are two members of the six-man Expedition 30 crew currently living aboard the International Space Station. Two Americans, another Russian and a Dutch astronaut round out the crew.
Today's spacewalk is the 162nd spacewalk dedicated to the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station, which was built by five different space agencies representing 15 countries. Construction of the $100 billion space station began in 1998.

Astronomers are watching the astronomical equivalent of an instant replay of a spectacular outburst from the unstable, behemoth double-star system Eta Carinae, which was initially seen on Earth nearly 170 years ago. Astrophysicists affiliated with UC Santa Barbara and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) contributed to the study.
Dubbed the "Great Eruption," the outburst lasted from 1837 to 1858 and temporarily made Eta Carinae the second brightest star in the sky. But luckily for today's astronomers, some of the light from the eruption took an indirect path to Earth and is just arriving now. The wayward light was heading in a different direction, away from our planet, when it bounced off dust lingering far from the turbulent stars and was rerouted to Earth, an effect called a "light echo." Because of its longer path, the light reached Earth 170 years later than the light that arrived directly.
The team's paper will appear Feb. 16, in a letter to the journal Nature. Armin Rest of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., initially discovered the light echoes, and was the leader of the study.
Federica Bianco, a postdoctoral researcher at UCSB and LCOGT, used LCOGT's Faulkes Telescope South in Siding Spring, Australia, to record the explosion after this time delay and compare it to eyewitness reports of the brightness of the star from the 1800's to determine that the light echo was indeed from the "Great Eruption."
"You are at the stadium, watching the game, and your team scores," said Bianco. "But you are too far away to get the details of the action, or in the case of Eta Carinae's great eruption, you do not have modern instruments, detectors, and spectrographs to study it. Now we are getting a replay ?? an up-close, detailed view of our cosmic eruption. And just like with the replay, we get to see the outburst from a different point of view, as the light that we see now was originally traveling in a different direction than the light seen in the 1840's."
Andy Howell, a staff scientist at LCOGT and adjunct faculty member at UCSB, adds, "We finally got to watch firsthand the event that created the iconic Hubble Space Telescope images of giant lobes of gas expanding away from Eta Carinae. It turns out it was an explosion ?? and a strange, cool one. It just blows my mind that we can go back in time and watch one of astronomy's greatest hits, and greatest mysteries, with a cosmic instant replay."
The observations are providing new insight into the behavior of powerful massive stars on the brink of detonation. Very massive stars, especially a pair of them, are exceedingly rare, and little is known about how they lose mass as they die. The views of the nearby erupting star revealed some unexpected results, which will force astronomers to modify physical models of the outburst.
Located 8,000 light-years from Earth, Eta Carinae is one of the largest and brightest star systems in our Milky Way galaxy. Although the chaotic duo is known for its petulant outbursts, the Great Eruption was the biggest ever observed. During the 20-year episode, Eta Carinae shed some 20 solar masses. Some of the outflow formed the system's twin giant lobes. Before the epic event, the stellar pair was 140 times heftier than our Sun.
The team's study involved a mix of visible-light and spectroscopic observations from ground-based telescopes. These observations mark the first time astronomers have used spectroscopy to analyze a light echo from a star undergoing powerful recurring eruptions, though they have measured this unique phenomenon around exploding stars called supernovae. Spectroscopy captures a star's "fingerprints," providing details about its behavior, including the temperature and speed of the ejected material.
The replay is giving astronomers a unique look at the outburst, and turning up some surprises. The turbulent star does not behave like other stars of its class. Eta Carinae is a member of a stellar class called Luminous Blue Variables ?? large, extremely bright stars that are prone to periodic outbursts.
The temperature of the outflow from Eta Carinae's central region, for example, is about 8,500 degrees Fahrenheit (5,000 Kelvin), which is much cooler than that of other erupting stars. "This star really seems to be an oddball," Rest said. "Now we have to go back to the models and see what has to change to actually produce what we are measuring."
The team first spotted the light echo while comparing visible-light observations they took of the star in 2010 and 2011 with the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory's Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in Chile. They obtained another set of CTIO observations taken in 2003 by astronomer Nathan Smith of the University of Arizona in Tucson, which helped them piece together the whole 20-year outburst.
The research group will continue monitoring Eta Carinae because light from the outburst is still streaming to Earth. "We should see brightening again in six months from another increase in light that was seen in 1844," Rest said. "We hope to capture light from the outburst coming from different directions so that we can get a complete picture of the eruption."

Apple announced Monday a non-profit labor group has started examining working conditions at some of its suppliers in China, as the company tries to calm a growing storm over how the workers who build iPads and iPhones are treated.
One particular supplier, Foxconn, has come under fire for working conditions at its facilities including alleged?child labor violations and unsafe work environments. Labor advocates have long noted the problems, but the working conditions?got more exposure following a scathing expose in the New York Times last month. The Foxconn plants?have seen a rash of suicides in the past year.
Protests have swelled over Apple's labor issues, including demonstrations at the company's stores around the globe. There's also a petition?on Change.org?titled "Apple: Protect Workers Making iPhones in Chinese Factories" which has more than 200,000 signatures. The petition was started by Mark Shields, an Apple customer who appealed to the company to: "Please make these changes immediately, so that each of us can once again hold our heads high and say, 'I?m a Mac person.'"
Last week, Foxconn's computers were hacked as part of the growing protests, according to The Guardian.
The bad press has been rare for Apple, whose stock hit $500 a share for the first time ever Monday,?so it?s not unexpected that the company would move to take some action. It?s unclear, however, whether these audits will lead to change.
The Fair Labor Association (FLA) will conduct what Apple calls, ?special voluntary audits? of Foxconn?s plants in Shenzhen and Chengdu, China. The first inspection commenced Monday, according to a company statement. The findings will be posted on the organization?s website in March. www.fairlabor.org.
?We believe that workers everywhere have the right to a safe and fair work environment, which is why we?ve asked the FLA to independently assess the performance of our largest suppliers,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?The inspections now underway are unprecedented in the electronics industry, both in scale and scope, and we appreciate the FLA agreeing to take the unusual step of identifying the factories in their reports.?
Some labor advocates aren't as hopeful.
"The entry of Apple to FLA is a welcome development," said Mary Gallagher, director of the University of Michigan's Center for Chinese Studies, and associate professor for political science. "However, I'm not optimistic that conditions in Apple's supplier factories will change if we only rely on occasional inspections from an overseas group."
Chinese workers, she continued, "are increasingly aware of their legal rights at the workplace but they often lack the proper tools to realize enforcement of those rights, such as the right to strike and the right to organize collectively."
Li Qiang, director of China Labor Watch based in New York, said "FLA speaks on behalf of the companies, not workers.?If Apple wants the inspections be accurate and trustworthy, it should have labor advocacy groups who speak for the workers involved in the inspection process."
A call to FLA officials was not immediately returned.
The FLA will interview thousands of workers at the facilities, according to Apple, and review?compensation, safety, and even?the dormitories where Foxconn houses its employees.
The company's own audits of its final assembly plants, conducted since 2006, have done?little to alter conditions at the facilities, according to labor experts and Apple?s own report on the state of its Chinese manufacturing partners, which was?released last month.
China Labor Watch's Qiang said he sees Apple's move as more of an attempt to rebuild its public image rather than?to help workers.
"What Apple should do now is to take action to solve the problems and improve the labor conditions in their supplier factories, not to conduct inspections and put the factories into the media and public's attention," he maintained.?
Separate works provided vital information on the impact of Massachusetts health reform and the influence of industry relationships in health care
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Research studies that helped shine a light on the impact of health reform in Massachusetts and industry influence on health care, respectively, were jointly awarded the AcademyHealth HSR (Health Services Research) Impact Award at the 2012 National Health Policy Conference in Washington, D.C.
The HSR Impact Award is presented by AcademyHealth in recognition of outstanding positive impact of health services research on health policy or practice. This year, two winners were chosen for the HSR Impact Award.
Evaluation of Health Reform in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts health reform evaluation, conducted by Sharon Long and colleagues at the Urban Institute and Social Science Research Solutions, enabled researchers and policymakers to better understand the impact of system-wide change on insurance coverage, access to and use of health care, and the affordability of health care. Not only did the evaluation improve understanding of the myriad impacts of reform, but early findings from the evaluation also helped move the policy debate from whether near-universal coverage could be achieved to how to maintain and pay for the coverage expansion. The research, which was conducted in conjunction with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, informed the national debate by providing updates on the real-world experiences in Massachusetts under its health reform system. They have also identified problems, such as insufficient provider capacity and gaps in access to care, particularly due to health care costs. The work done by Dr. Long and her colleagues has played, and will continue to play, a key role in informing the national health care debate as states react to the Affordable Care Act.
Relationships with Industry in Medicine, Medical Education, and Research
The second recognized body of research focused on identifying the benefits and risks of relationships between physicians/scientists and industry including activities like the provision of samples, gifts and speaker fees. Early work by Drs. Eric Campbell and David Blumenthal indicated that those scientists with industry support were significantly more productive than those without such support. However, industry-funded scientists were also significantly more likely to engage in secrecy related to their industrial research. This study, and subsequent follow-on studies by Dr. Campbell and collaborators at the Morgan Institute for Health Policy (MIHP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital and elsewhere, set the benchmark for tracking of the frequency, benefits, and risks of industry support in academic research and played a significant role in changing policies and practices relating to industry relationships nationally, across states, and within medical schools and research institutions. This body of research helped motivate calls for a national system for disclosing physician payments, which led to the enactment of the "Physician Payments Sunshine Act" (S. 301) into law as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148). By 2010, Dr. Campbell's research showed a significant decrease in the percentage of physicians accepting medication (from 78 percent in 2004 to 63 percent in 2009), gifts (from 83 percent to 72 percent), reimbursements from drug companies (33 to 18 percent), and other industry payments (28 to 14 percent). Overall, the percentage of physicians with any type of industry relationship in the previous year had decreased significantly from 94 to 84 percent.
"These studies show us the power of evidence to improve our understanding of complex policy issues, shine a light on opportunities to improve the system and offer actionable insights to policymakers," said Dr. Lisa Simpson, president and CEO of AcademyHealth.
