The Art Of Expression: T-Shirts Of The Disrupt NYC 2012 Hackathon

tshirts-21Hackers aren't necessarily known for their fashion sense. Most of the time, a t-shirt and jeans is as far as it goes. But there are certain circumstances in which it's clear that hackers pay a little extra attention after rolling out of bed in the morning. The TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon is one of those instances, but that doesn't mean that the go-to jeans and T have been abandoned. Even better, our hackers are choosing to express themselves through the t-shirts, and I have to say that they're some of the coolest I've seen. Last year in San Francisco, most of our hackers had something on their heads, whether it was a baseball cap, headphones, an Ushanka, or even a shower cap. This year, it's all about the classic T, but with a coder's spin. Without further ado, these are the most badass t-shirts of the TC Disrupt NYC Hackathon:

Prosecutors seek life for Bali bombing suspect

(AP) ? Prosecutors said Monday that an Indonesian militant known as the "Demolition Man" should spend the rest of his life in prison for helping to build the car bomb used in the 2002 Bali nightclub attacks.

Umar Patek, a leading member of the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah, is the last key suspect to be tried in the blasts that killed 202 people, thrusting Indonesia onto the frontlines in the war on terror.

Many of the victims were foreign tourists, including 88 Australians and seven Americans.

Lead prosecutor Bambang Suharijadi told the West Jakarta District Court the 45-year-old militant should get a life term. He said Patek was guilty of illegal weapons possession, helping and concealing terrorist acts, immigration violations and premeditated murder leading to massive casualties.

A verdict is not expected until next month.

It's still possible, but unlikely, that judges will decide to hand down the maximum penalty of death by firing squad. Analysts, however, expect he will end up getting less than 20 years behind bars.

Patek, who was arrested last year in Pakistan, has denied playing a major role in assembling the massive car bomb that was the largest bomb used in the attack. He said that job fell to Jemaah Islamiyah bomb-making masterminds, Azahari bin Husin and Dulmatin, both of whom have since been killed in police raids.

The militant also insisted he was against the bombings from the start but didn't dare to speak out. They were in theory were meant to avenge Western policies in the Palestinian territories. Patek said he saw no connection between the original mission, fighting against the oppression of fellow Muslims, and the target, partying tourists.

Patek and his lawyers will respond to the prosecution's sentencing demand next week.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has been hit by a string of terrorist attacks since the Oct. 12, 2002, Bali bombings. But all have been far less deadly, thanks in part, security experts say, to a relentless crackdown on Jemaah Islamiyah that has largely decimated their ranks.

Brammo Empulse and Empulse R finally unveiled: 100-mph speeds and raised prices

Brammo has suffered some major setbacks in getting its latest Empulse electric motorcycle to market, but the company has stuck to its revised launch date: it unveiled the 2013 model last night. The key specs haven't changed during the delay -- we're still looking at a six-speed gearbox, a max speed of 100 mph and a fast-recharge time of 3.5 hours -- but the price has jumped from $14,000 to $16,995. There's also the Empluse R, a more premium model that will go on sale for $18,995 in June. The main difference between the base model and the R is the material: the Empulse has a plastic body, while the R uses carbon fiber. Check out the full presser below the break -- and if you're holding out for the 2013 Empulse, the gallery pics of the R will have to tide you over till the base model launches early next year.

ASTAMIDS Fly-By Mine Detectors Save US Lives and Limbs [Monster Machines]

IEDs are far and away the greatest threat to our armed forces in Afghanistan, having killed nearly 700 soldiers since 2001 and accounting for roughly half of all US troop deaths in the region since 2008. The newly developed ASTAMIDS system aims to find these booby traps before our ground forces do. More »
