This is the Modem World: Digital junk food

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World TKTKTK

I'm hanging out in Atlanta right now, getting ready to speak at Digital Summit 2013 about things you're probably not terribly interested in. Most importantly, I'm sitting at a bar and just ordered what looks to be a monster of a burger called the "Hot Mess" at a place called Park Bar near my hotel. Despite my disdain for online review sites, it was either this via Yelp or the hotel bar and, well, I find hotel bars depressing.

It's also pretty clear that the only reason I ordered the Hot Mess is because my wife isn't here to give me a hard time about it. No, I'm not a kept man, but I respect her knowledge of health and try to let her guide me most of the time. But when I'm on the road, I sometimes let all bets fall to the floor so that daddy can dig into a burger uninterrupted.

Should You Get BRCA Gene Testing?

gty angelina jolie thg 130514 wblog Angelina Jolies Choice: Should You Get BRCA Gene Testing?

Angelina Jolie revealed she had genetic testing and a double mastectomy. ? ? (Image credit: Alastair Grant/AFP/Getty Images)

Angelina Jolie?s decision to get tested for gene mutations linked to a heightened breast cancer risk has many women wondering whether they should get tested, too.

Angelina Jolie Reveals She Had Double Mastectomy to Prevent Breast Cancer

Women with mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 are five times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. That means that 60 percent of women with a BRCA mutation will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, compared to 12 percent of women in the general population.

But less than 1 percent of women actually have a BRCA mutation, making costly genetic testing unnecessary for most. Could you be one of them? You can learn a lot from your family history.

For women who are not of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, the NCI recommends genetic testing if you have:

  • Two first-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer, with one of them before age 51. First-degree relatives include your mother or sister;
  • Three or more first- or second-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer. Second-degree relatives include your grandmother or aunt;
  • A combination of first- and second-degree relatives diagnosed with breast cancer or ovarian cancer;
  • A?first-degree relative?diagnosed with cancer in both breasts;
  • A combination of first- or second-degree relatives diagnosed with ovarian cancer;
  • A first- or second-degree relative diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer;
  • A male relative diagnosed with breast cancer.

For women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, who are more likely to carry a specific BRCA2 defect passed from generation to generation, the NCI recommends genetic testing if you have:

  • A first-degree relative diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer;
  • Two second-degree relatives on the same side of the family diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.

About 2 percent of adult women have a family history pattern described above but, again, less than 1 percent of women will have a BRCA mutation.

?Not every?woman in such families carries a harmful?BRCA1?or?BRCA2?mutation, and?not every?cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes,? according to the NCI. ?Furthermore,?not every?woman who has a harmful?BRCA1?or?BRCA2?mutation will develop breast and/or ovarian cancer.?

Women without one of the family history patterns described above are unlikely to have a harmful BRCA?mutation, according to the NCI.

Based on her genetic testing results, Jolie opted for a preventive double mastectomy ? the surgical removal of both breasts to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Studies suggest that preventive mastectomy can reduce breast cancer risk by about 90 percent in high-risk women, according to the NCI. But surgery carries risks, too, so women are advised to talk to their doctors about the procedure?s pros, cons and possible alternatives.

'Weight loss gut bacterium' found

Bacteria that live in the gut have been used to reverse obesity and Type-2 diabetes in animal studies.

Research, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that a broth containing a single species of bacteria could dramatically alter the health of obese mice.

It is thought to change the gut lining and the way food is absorbed.

Similar tests now need to be take place in people to see if the same bacteria can be used to shed the pounds.

The human body is teeming with bacteria - the tiny organisms outnumber human cells in the body 10 to one.

And there is growing evidence that this collection of bacteria or "microbiome" affects health.

Obesity

Studies have shown differences between the types and numbers of bacteria in the guts of lean and obese people.

We did not completely reverse the obesity, but it is a very strong decrease in the fat mass?

End Quote Prof Patrice Cani Catholic University of Louvain

Meanwhile gastric bypass operations have been shown to change the balance of bacteria in the gut.

Researchers at the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium, worked with a single species of bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila. It normally makes up 3-5% of gut bacteria, but its levels fall in obesity.

Mice on a high fat diet - which led them to put on two to three times more fat than normal, lean, mice - were fed the bacteria.

The mice remained bigger than their lean cousins, but had lost around half of their extra weight despite no other changes to their diet.

They also had lower levels of insulin resistance, a key symptom of Type-2 diabetes.

Prof Patrice Cani, from the Catholic University of Louvain, told the BBC: "Of course it is an improvement, we did not completely reverse the obesity, but it is a very strong decrease in the fat mass.

I don't think it's feasible that you can eat cream cakes and chips and sausages all day long and then eat bacteria to reverse all that?

End Quote Prof Colin Hill University College Cork

"It is the first demonstration that there is a direct link between one specific species and improving metabolism."

Surprise

Adding the bacteria increased the thickness of the gut's mucus barrier, which stops some material passing from the gut to the blood. It also changed the chemical signals coming from the digestive system - which led to changes in the way fat was processed elsewhere in the body.

Similar results were achieved by adding a type of fibre to diets which led to an increase in the levels of Akkermansia muciniphila.

Prof Cani said it was "surprising" that just one species, out of the thousands in the gut, could have such an effect.

He said this was a "first step" towards "eventually using these bacteria as prevention or treatment of obesity and Type-2 diabetes" and that some form of bacteria-based therapy would be used "in the near future".

Prof Colin Hill, a microbiologist at University College Cork, said: "It's a very exciting study, we've had lots linking bacteria and weight gain but this is the first time an intervention seems to work.

"I don't think it's feasible that you can eat cream cakes and chips and sausages all day long and then eat bacteria to reverse all that."

He said it was more likely that the research would lead to understanding of exactly what happens in the gut, which could lead to tailored dietary advice for people trying to lose weight.

TORONTO (AP) ? The Toronto Maple Leafs are close to making playoff history.

Captain Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel scored third-period goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Boston Bruins 2-1 Sunday to send their playoff series back to Boston for Game 7.

Game 7 is Monday night in Boston. The winner will play the winner of the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals series. That series is also tied 3-3 with Game 7 on Monday night.

The Maple Leafs, making their return to the postseason for the first time since 2004, became the 48th team in Stanley Cup history to rally from a 3-1 deficit to force Game 7.

The only time Toronto has come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a series was the 1942 Stanley Cup finals against the Detroit Red Wings when the Leafs trailed 3-0 before reeling off four straight wins.

Sunday's win also snapped a 54-year stretch of home playoff failure against the Bruins.

Toronto's previous home playoff win against Boston was March 31, 1959, when the Leafs won 3-2 in overtime. Nine straight postseason home losses followed in the decades since.

Milan Lucic scored for Boston with 26 seconds left in the third.

Boston coach Claude Julien was critical of his team's puck management and decision-making.

"We've been a Jekyll-and-Hyde hockey team all year and that's what you're seeing right now," he said. "I think it's important to us to bring the good Bruins team to the table for Game 7."

A loss on Monday and Boston, Stanley Cup winners in 2011, will exit in the seventh game of the first round for the second year in a row.

"We know we're going to go into a hostile building (Monday) night in Boston," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. "We know the passion in their market and their fans. We've been there already, we know what we're heading to and we just have to make sure that we play the game to a higher level than we did tonight. Because we know they will."

As if the Bruins did not have enough problems in Toronto, their plane broke down.

"Late during tonight's game we were made aware that there was a malfunction with our airplane," Boston GM Peter Chiarelli said in a statement. "As a result we are staying in Toronto on Sunday night and the team will travel to Boston on Monday morning."

The Maple Leafs have momentum after two consecutive wins.

"They're a good team," Boston forward Patrice Bergeron said. "We never said it was going to be an easy series. Here we are now and it's all about one game. Whatever happened in the first six games doesn't matter. It's all about showing up (Monday)."

James Reimer was again steady in the Toronto net, making 29 saves to earn the win. Tuukka Rask finished with 24 stops in the Boston goal.

"If you only score one goal, a lot of times you end up on the wrong side, Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg said. "Tonight, we just didn't score enough to win."

"Being frustrated right now isn't going to help," Bergeron said. "It's about being determined to find ways to put it in. It's all about (Monday) now."

For Phaneuf, scoring a goal was a bit of redemption after being involved in the play that led to the Bruins' overtime winner in Game 4.

Phaneuf's goal at 1:48 of the third period came after Nazem Kadri ripped a wrist shot that was tipped in by Phaneuf, who had made his way to the front of the goal after continuing his rush.

Boston had lost the puck in the Toronto end on an attempt at a pass by David Krejci.

Kessel then added to the lead at 8:59, picking up the puck after James van Riemsdyk dealt with two Bruins in front of goal and backhanded it past Tuukka Rask. Kadri beat Patrice Bergeron on the faceoff to start the play.

"When you play as many minutes and you're the focus of your hockey club, when a lot of things don't go the way they're supposed to go, being the captain, that C becomes pretty heavy," Carlyle said of Phaneuf, whose decision to pinch in and hit Nathan Horton resulted in an odd-man rush that led to the OT goal in Game 4.

"And when you make a mistake, which he did, your teammates want to rally around you and you want to try and correct that as quickly as possible."

Said Phaneuf: "I felt that I owed it to the guys and luckily I was able to tip that (shot). It definitely felt good."

After poor outings, Kadri was better on Sunday.

"Much more noticeable," Carlyle said. "Much more movement as far as moving off the puck. He skated with the puck and he skated when he didn't have the puck ... When he skates and he can make room, he can create plays and that's what you saw tonight. And that's been absent but he delivered in a big way tonight."

Van Riemsdyk was also effective, earning assists on both goals.

After combining for 170 shots in the past two games, the teams played defensively in what started as a much tighter game, but opened up later on.

The tight game made for a tense atmosphere inside where 19,591 fans, wielding giveaway blue or white towels.

Outside, another amped-up crowd packed Maple Leafs Square outside the Air Canada Centre to watch the game on a big screen, despite chilly temperatures at game time.

First-line Leafs center Tyler Bozak skated during warm-ups but was scratched.

Bozak, who scored short-handed in Game 5, had missed the final two games of the regular season with what was believed to be a shoulder injury.

Joe Colborne, making his playoff debut, came in for Bozak.

Boston defenseman Andrew Ference did not make the trip to Toronto for undisclosed reasons. But Wade Redden returned to the lineup after missing Game 5.

That prompted Julien to change his defensive pairings, as he did when Ference was suspended for Game 2. Captain Zdeno Chara played with Johnny Boychuk, Dennis Seidenberg with Adam McQuaid, and Redden with rookie Dougie Hamilton.

Boston dominated most of the first period, skating hard and pushing the pace.

Toronto had to kill off an early penalty. Carlyle juggled his forward lines.

The Bruins outshot Toronto 8-7 in a tight first period. Without Bozak, the Leafs won just six of 17 faceoffs in the period. Toronto outhit Boston 19-17.

Boston continued to bottle up the Leafs in their own end for stretches of the second, with Boychuk hitting the post with a shot from the blue line.

A diving Reimer made a stop on Patrice Bergeron six minutes in, going across the crease on his stomach as Boychuk came from behind the net and tried to stuff the puck in.

Reimer, who came into the game leading all playoff goalies in shots against (207) and saves (192), stopped Bergeron again seconds later.

After the Game 5 loss, Julien called for more production from the line of Bergeron, Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin, who had 59 shots but just one goal in the first five games.

The trio combined for one shot in the first period but were more active as the game wore on.

The teams had 10 shots apiece in the second period. Toronto led the hit count 42-33 with Leafs defenseman Ryan O'Byrne and forward Leo Komarov leading the way with six apiece.

The final hit count was 58-50 in favor of Toronto.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Grammy-winning musician Chris Brown's neighbors are unhappy with what some are calling frightening art he's chosen to have painted along the curb of his Hollywood Hills home.

A neighborhood group said the grimacing, sharp-toothed, red-eyed goblins painted along a retaining wall have been scaring children, and is an eyesore to boot, according to the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/19cjOBY ).

"There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they're literally frightened. It's like devils on the wall ? big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we're used to," Patti Negri, president of the Hollywood Dell Civic Association, told the newspaper.

L.A. city code officials responded to complaints about the monster art and cited the "Run It!" singer $376 for unpermitted and excessive signage.

Under city ordinances, it's illegal to create murals on most private properties. Though that didn't stop Madonna from painting her Hollywood Hills home in red and yellow stripes in the 1990s.

Brown has been ordered to remove the goblin paintings within 30 days, but his attorney Mark Geragos said the musician is not backing down.

"They are trying to suspend the First Amendment," Geragos said.

Geragos alleges neighbors are harassing Brown and have also made parking complaints about him and called animal control.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Saturday, Negri said all she wants is for Brown to "tone it down and be a better neighbor."

Brown's tumultuous relationship with singer Rihanna and foul-mouthed Twitter presence have given him a bad boy reputation.

Brown won a Grammy in 2011 for Best R&B Album with "F.A.M.E." and was arrested shortly after the 2009 awards ceremony for assaulting Rihanna.

"I know a $300 fine is probably pocket change. But hopefully and maybe, he'll just see the light and decide to be a good neighbor," Negri told the Times. "We're happy to have him ? if he just tones it down."

Barns Are Red Because of How Stars Explode

We all know that barns are usually red. But why? Well, the answer is a little more complicated than you might think, but basically it's because of nuclear fusion.

Googler Yonatan Zunger took the time to explain the whole thing in great detail on Google+, and the train of thought goes a little something like this:

  • Barns are red because red paint is cheap.
  • Red paint is cheap make because the ground is loaded with an iron-oxide compound called red ochre that makes a good pigment. (or basically, rust)
  • The ground is loaded with red ochre because when stars die, physics dictates they generate a bunch of iron and explode.

It's that step where things get a little more complicated. Zunger explains it this way:

[When a star dies, it] starts to shrink. And as it shrinks, the pressure goes up, and the temperature goes up, until suddenly it hits a temperature where a new reaction can get started. These new reactions give it a big burst of energy, but start to form heavier elements still, and so the cycle gradually repeats, with the star reacting further and further up the periodic table, producing more and more heavy elements as it goes.

Until it hits 56. At that point, the reactions simply stop producing energy at all; the star shuts down and collapses without stopping. This collapse raises the pressure even more, and sets off various nuclear reactions which will produce even heavier elements, but they don?t produce any energy: just stuff.

This stuff-generation just continues for a while, churning out material with an atomic mass of around 56 (iron) until eventually, it meets its final demise and explodes (sometimes), seeding that material through out the cosmos.

It's that rusty startdust that litters the ground of this planet we live on and makes it cheap and easy to get a whole bunch of red paint for our barns. Crazy, right? You can dig waaaaaay deeper into the nitty gritty details by reading Zunger's wildly in-depth post. [Yonatan Zunger via Smithsonian Blog]

Officials: Bomb kills 3 Sunni worshippers in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a bomb explosion near a Sunni mosque near Baghdad has killed three worshippers and wounded seven.

Police say that the bomb went off after Friday prayers as worshippers were leaving the al-Sultan mosque in Mahaweel, 55 kilometers (35 miles) south of the capital.

A hospital official confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Attacks on mosques, especially where Sunnis worship, have been on the rise recently. Iraqi officials have warned that insurgents are trying to take advantage of the country's political and sectarian turmoil by targeting mosques in an attempt to reignite civil strife in the country.

(AP) ? SWAT teams from three counties and a team from the California Department of Corrections, as well as federal law enforcement officials and local police have joined the hunt for a Northern California man wanted in the killing of his wife and two young daughters.

The extra help ? which includes two helicopters and an armored vehicle ? comes as law enforcement officials continued Saturday to search through the rugged terrain of California's remote North Coast for Shane Franklin Miller, said Humboldt County sheriff's Lt. Wayne Hanson, a spokesman for the department.

Miller, 45, is suspected of slaying his family Tuesday night in the rural community of Shingletown, then fleeing to Humboldt County.

Miller ? who is considered armed and extremely dangerous ? grew up in the area and knows the thick forests of the region very well, officials said.

Authorities were searching for Miller through a rugged wilderness area, much of it federal land, with poor roads and limited access.

"This guy is very unpredictable, he's a very violent person. We need to get him in custody," Hanson said.

Area residents were being asked to report any break-ins or other unusual activities. They were also being asked to stay inside once night falls and to keep their doors locked.

Investigators have recovered Miller's pickup truck after it was found abandoned Wednesday night near Petrolia, about 200 miles west of the home that Miller shared with his wife, Sandy, 34, and daughters, Shelby, 8, and Shasta, 5.

There have been no sightings of Miller since the truck was found, officials said.

Miller is suspected of slaying his family Tuesday night in the rural community of Shingletown, then fleeing to Humboldt County, where low fog and dense brush offer plenty of cover. His mother told The Associated Press she had no idea whether her son and daughter-in-law had suffered marital problems or why Miller might turn on his family.

Meanwhile, in Shasta County, detectives searched the home where the killings took place for evidence and clues as to where Miller might have been headed, said Lt. Dave Kent of the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

In 1996, Miller was convicted of felony cultivation of marijuana in a county known worldwide for the high quality pot grown in the same hard-to-reach forests authorities now are combing.

In 2002, Miller was charged with making and selling marijuana for distribution, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing a machine gun and money laundering, according to court records. He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a gun and served 46 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, court records show.

3 Suspected Cases of SARS-Related Virus in France

French health officials said Friday they are investigating three suspected cases of a deadly new respiratory virus related to SARS, in people who had close contact in the hospital with France's only confirmed case.

Beatrice Degrugillers, a spokeswoman for the regional health agency in France's Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, said a nurse at the hospital where the man was hospitalized in late April has herself been under watch at the hospital in Douai since Thursday night.

A doctor and a former hospital roommate who had each been in contact with the first patient also remain hospitalized. Test results are expected later Friday.

If confirmed, the additional cases would heighten concerns about the virus' ability to spread easily between people. Health authorities have previously said the new coronavirus has spread in limited circumstances between people in very close contact, such as relatives taking care of family members.

In 2003, the spread of SARS in hospitals in Asia ultimately sparked a global outbreak. Officials consider any spread of a new virus in hospitals to be the first sign it is gaining the ability to infect humans easily.

On Wednesday authorities announced the 65-year-old Frenchman was France's first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, which has killed 18 people since being identified last year in the Middle East.

The patient fell ill after returning from a nine-day vacation in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as part of a package tour, the Health Ministry said.

The man, whose identity was not released, returned from Dubai on April 17. He was hospitalized with respiratory problems in the northern French city of Valenciennes on April 23, and transferred to a more advanced facility in Douai on April 29.

Paris' Pasteur Institute analyzed the man's virus and confirmed that it is a novel coronavirus.

Since September 2012, the World Health Organization has been informed of 30 confirmed cases of the virus, and 18 of the patients have died. Cases have emerged in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Britain and Germany, and health officials say the virus has likely already spread from person to person in some circumstances.

Since the virus emerged last year, European authorities have put in place monitoring measures. In France, 20 people have already been examined for suspected cases of the virus, but the other 19 turned up negative, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said.

The patient who traveled to Dubai is the only positive case. His family members have been tested and are not infected.

Idolator & Gap Styld.by: Skylar Grey | Music News, Reviews, and ...

In case you missed our announcement yesterday, Idolator and Gap are throwing a Styld.by summer celebration at Los Angeles? shopping mecca The Grove this evening (May 9), and you?re invited. Singer-songwriter/all around hit-maker Skylar Grey will be at the shindig to perform songs from her upcoming Kidinakorner/Interscope debut LP Don?t Look Down, ahead of the album?s July 9 release date.

You know Grey?s name from her songwriting contributions in recent years, not the least of which include Eminem and Rihanna?s ?Love The Way You Lie,?? Dr. Dre?s ?I Need A Doctor? and Cee Lo Green?s current single ?Only You.? (By the way, ever listened to Skylar?s own, haunting version of ?Love The Way You Lie??) She recently paired up with Em once again for her playful and poppy early 2013 single??C?mon Let Me Ride,? before offering up the much more dark ?Final Warning? last month.

Like current chart sensations Imagine Dragons, Skylar was signed by British producer Alex Da Kid, who raved to Idolator about Grey in 2010: ?To me she?s an amazing artist. She plays like nine or ten instruments. She writes amazing songs. She?s the real deal.?

Upbeat pop, introspective ballads, hip hop-influenced tracks ? yes, Skylar?s upcoming album Don?t Look Down should prove to be quite a flavorful mix of sounds. ?It was really hard for me to settle on one genre,? the singer told us last month. ?It?s actually impossible for me to do that? I feel like I?ve landed on something for this album that I?m really proud of.?

Music aside, you can get a feel for Skylar?s summer fashion sense via the Gap threads she?s wearing above ? a combo of ?sexy boyfriend shorts? and a striped sweater.

Don?t forget to RSVP for tonight?s in-store performance by Grey at the Grove Gap in Los Angeles.

Is Microsoft Looking to Buy Into the E-Book Business? | Slog

Last night, Eric Eldon and Ingrid Lunden at TechCrunch reported:

Microsoft is offering to pay $1 billion to buy the digital assets of Nook Media LLC, the digital book and college book joint venture with Barnes & Noble and other investors, according to internal documents we?ve obtained. In this plan, Microsoft would redeem preferred units in Nook Media, which also includes a college book division, leaving it with the digital operation ? e-books, as well as Nook e-readers and tablets.

The documents also reveal that Nook Media plans to discontinue its Android-based tablet business by the end of its 2014 fiscal year as it transitions to a model where Nook content is distributed through apps on ?third-party partner? devices.

For a while now, Microsoft has been the only major tech player without its own e-book storefront. This looks like an attempt to buy into the market with an already-established brand. I'm not convinced that the Nook e-bookstore is worth a billion dollars, but this certainly would be the easiest way for Microsoft to play catch-up with Amazon, Apple, and Google.

Fun and friends help ease the pain of breast cancer

May 9, 2013 ? Breast cancer patients who say they have people with whom they have a good time, or have "positive social interactions" with, are better able to deal with pain and other physical symptoms, according to a new Kaiser Permanente study published today in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

"This study provides research-based evidence that social support helps with physical symptoms," said lead author Candyce H. Kroenke, ScD, MPH, staff scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. "Social support mechanisms matter in terms of physical outcomes."

The study, which is among the first to examine exactly how social relationships influence quality of life in breast cancer patients, also found that tangible support (such as help with household tasks and errands) was most useful to those with late-stage cancer.

"While hundreds of studies have examined the role of factors influencing cancer risk and prevention, this study is one of a small but growing number that focus on quality of life after a breast cancer diagnosis," Kroenke said.

Part of the Pathways study of breast cancer survivorship at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, the study included 3,139 female members of Kaiser Permanente in Northern California who were newly diagnosed with breast cancer between 2006 and 2011. Within about two months of their breast cancer diagnosis, study participants answered several detailed questionnaires on their social networks (including friends and relatives, spouse/intimate relationships, and religious, social and community ties); the kinds of support they received (tangible, emotional/informational, affection and positive social interaction); their emotional and physical quality of life; and physical symptoms from breast cancer.

Women with the highest levels of social integration -- the largest social networks, or the personal relationships that surround an individual -- were most likely to report the best overall quality of life during breast cancer treatment, and higher levels of social support were also related to better emotional quality of life. Moreover, of the different types of social support, positive social interaction, defined as the availability of other persons to do fun things, was the most important predictor of physical quality of life. Those who indicated having little or no positive interaction were three times more likely to report a low quality of life and greater physical symptoms.

"Positive social interaction was significantly related to every quality-of-life measure," Kroenke and co-authors wrote. "Given that this dimension was determined by the availability of someone with whom to have fun, relax and get one's mind off things for awhile, it is possible that positive social interaction may enable women to forget for a while the distress of being a cancer patient, and the physiologic effects last beyond the actual interaction."

The impact of tangible support for breast cancer patients -- such as doing chores, bringing them to the doctor, or providing food -- was also strong among late-stage patients: those with low levels of tangible support were 2.74 times more likely to report that their quality of life was worse than average. About 230,000 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer each year in the United States, and as of 2012 there were about 2.9 million breast cancer survivors. The fact that more women are being cured of breast cancer increases the importance of quality of life after diagnosis, Kroenke explained.

The Pathways study and an additional study based at the Division of Research called LACE (Life After Cancer Epidemiology) are collecting and analyzing data about women's genetic background, tumor characteristics and lifestyle choices immediately after diagnosis. Findings from these studies are providing information to help guide women as they make decisions following a breast cancer diagnosis. Among these findings are that high-fat dairy consumption increases mortality risk; soy decreases the risk of breast cancer recurrence; quality of life after diagnosis influences outcomes; and physical activity is beneficial.

In addition to Kroenke, co-authors of the study were Marilyn L. Kwan, PhD, Isaac J. Ergas, MPH, Bette J. Caan, DrPH, and Larry H. Kushi, ScD, Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, Oakland, Calif.; Alfred I. Neugut, MD, MPH, PhD, and Dawn Hershman, MD, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, N.Y.; and Jaime D. Wright, PhD candidate, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, Calif.

The National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute Grant No. 2R01 CA105274 supported this study.

Nokia unveils the touchscreen Asha 501 with new software platform, we go handson video

One or more additional members are expected to join Nokia's Lumia line-up next Tuesday, but today the company has chosen New Delhi as the stage to unveil the Asha 501, a new touchscreen handset that further blurs the line between featurephone and smartphone. While the last touchscreen Asha Nokia launched was very much a tweaked version of its predecessors, the 501 has a radically different design akin to the latest QWERTY device stamped with the Asha brand. The aesthetics aren't all that's changed, however, as the 501 is running a re-engineered OS Nokia's dubbed the "Asha software platform" (the fruits of last year's Smarterphone acquisition). We were able to spend a little quality time with the handset, so head past the break for more details and our initial impressions.

Researches say diagnosis and intervention could be impacted by new findings

WASHINGTON Using MRI, neuroscientists at Georgetown University Medical Center found significant differences in brain anatomy when comparing men and women with dyslexia to their non-dyslexic control groups, suggesting that the disorder may have a different brain-based manifestation based on sex.

Their study, investigating dyslexia in both males and females, is the first to directly compare brain anatomy of females with and without dyslexia (in children and adults). Their findings were published online in the journal Brain Structure and Function.

Because dyslexia is two to three times more prevalent in males compared with females, "females have been overlooked," says senior author Guinevere Eden, PhD, director for the Center for the Study of Learning and past-president of the International Dyslexia Association.

"It has been assumed that results of studies conducted in men are generalizable to both sexes. But our research suggests that researchers need to tackle dyslexia in each sex separately to address questions about its origin and potentially, treatment," Eden says.

Previous work outside of dyslexia demonstrates that male and female brains are different in general, adds the study's lead author, Tanya Evans, PhD.

"There is sex-specific variance in brain anatomy and females tend to use both hemispheres for language tasks, while males just the left," Evans says. "It is also known that sex hormones are related to brain anatomy and that female sex hormones such as estrogen can be protective after brain injury, suggesting another avenue that might lead to the sex-specific findings reported in this study."

The study of 118 participants compared the brain structure of people with dyslexia to those without and was conducted separately in men, women, boys and girls. In the males, less gray matter volume is found in dyslexics in areas of the brain used to process language, consistent with previous work. In the females, less gray matter volume is found in dyslexics in areas involved in sensory and motor processing.

The results have important implications for understanding the origin of dyslexia and the relationship between language and sensory processing, says Evans.

Google Makes Its Customizable Apps Admin Console Available To All Customers

2868168916_1ab1970cdb_zToday, Google announced the eventual rollout of a brand new look for its Admin Console, an area that only admins of Google Apps will see. The aim of the redesign is to help those admins get to information quicker, manage user accounts easier and keep their company running as smooth as possible. The company boasts that “millions” of businesses, schools and government agencies are using Google Apps, so making sure that the Admin Console is as easy to use as possible is key to getting buy-in. According to the Admin Console FAQ, this new look has been available for new users as of April 17th, but this announcement signals the invitation to all customers. Some of the things being introduced to the Admin Console, which rolls out in a few weeks, are a universal search bar, new usage and activity stats at a glance, some bulk user actions and a customizable dashboard. The dashboard will let admins drag-and-drop the areas of Apps that they use the most, making it easier to do things like add new users or help employees out with password issues: Additionally, and while this might seem minor to most of us, the Admin Console now lives at an easier to remember URL, admin.google.com. That’s one of those tweaks that makes you wonder why it took so long. Here’s a complete demo of what’s new in the Admin Console: [Photo credit: Flickr]
